)Because Nanking was perpetrated by the Japanese and Tiananmen was perpetrated by their own government. Like most governments, China likes to scare their people with harsh enemies and minimize their understanding of the enemy at home.
In other words, propaganda.
Mind you, the Nanking massacre was arguably one of the nastiest events in modern history, so it may also correctly overshadow the Tiananmen Massacre.
